The city attracted international attention after the Bhopal disaster. when gas was leaked with methyl isocyanate from plant of (UCIL) Union Carbide India Limited on the night of 2 / 3 December 1984, top to the worst industrial tragedy in the record of industrialization BHOPAL and a loss of thousands of life. It is located on the place of an 11th century city, Bhojapal, founded by Raja Bhoj. This city was the capital of the former Bhopal state and now it's the capital of Madhya Pradesh ("Heart of India").
